GETTYSBURG NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD MUSEUM AND VISITOR CENTER Cumberland Township, Adams County, PA
Transportation Resource Group, Inc. (TRG) was chosen to be part of the consulting team responsible for the development of the new Gettysburg National Battlefield Museum (GNBM) and Visitor Center. The $12.4 million, 140,000 S.F. facility will replace the existing Visitor Center and Cyclorama buildings, located along Taneytown Pike (S.R. 0134). The new center will allow the area to be restored to reflect the prominent battles of Gettysburg. The current Visitor Center attracts 1.7 million visitors annually and the new center is expected to accommodate 2 million visitors. Baltimore Pike (S.R. 0097) will serve as the main entrance for the center.
One of the many challenges facing TRG for the project was how to address the impact of 10,000 daily vehicles and peak hour volumes of nearly 1,500 vehicles projected during the peak season for the new Center. The study approach selected was comprehensive and started with conducting traffic and parking count studies and patron surveys at the existing Visitor Center during the seasonal summer months. With this data in hand, TRG established traffic patterns to and from the current center and allowed the traffic to be re-assigned along the study area roadways to the new location. In addition, the parking occupancy and duration counts helped to establish the peak parking demand for the new facility.
In addition to the Traffic Impact Study (TIS), TRG was responsible for signal design and permitting, preparing site access concept design plans and preparing the directional way-finding signage plans along US Route 15, Baltimore Pike (S.R. 0097) for PennDOT approval.
The new facility is scheduled to open in spring 2008.
