U.S. 22/322 LEWISTOWN NARROWS Mifflin and Juniata Counties, PA
Transportation Resource Group, Inc. (TRG) was selected by PennDOT as the traffic engineering subconsultant for the Lewistown Narrows Project. The project involves the reconstruction of approximately 9 miles of U.S. 22/322 in Mifflin and Juniata Counties. Section A09, which is the third and final section of this project, is the second largest construction project ever awarded by PennDOT.
U.S. 22/322 is a critical highway through Central Pennsylvania, linking the Hershey/Harrisburg area to the State College area and all the communities in between. About 20,000 vehicles per day currently travel through the Narrows, which is known for its traffic congestion, especially during Penn State home football games. Safety has also been a problem through the Narrows, being cited as one of the country's most dangerous roadways.
As a traffic engineer on the Lewistown Narrows project, TRG was responsible for producing the Traffic Needs Report, which documented the existing deficiencies in terms of safety and congestion. TRG also assisted in evaluating the potential construction impacts of widening the highway to four-lanes, and designed the temporary traffic signals to control construction vehicle operations and prevent conflicts with the traveling public.
The project is scheduled to be completed in 2008, which includes construction of a new four-lane highway built along the existing two-lane highway alignment, between the Juniata River and the Shade Mountains. With completion of the project, motorists will now have a continuous four-lane roadway from the Hershey/Harrisburg area to Potters Mills.
