NEW STANTON TURNPIKE ACCESS Westmoreland County, PA
The Turnpike Access Project for the Greater New Stanton Area is being undertaken by the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission (PTC) primarily to evaluate the need for improved transportation facilities between the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the New Stanton economic center in Westmoreland County. County officials and economic development organizations representing the local business and industry leaders in the study area feel there is a need for improving access to nearby Pennsylvania Turnpike facilities to sustain the viability and competitiveness of the area's industries.
Industrial, commercial and residential developments in Westmoreland County are placing a growing demand on its roadway system. As a result of this growth, delays are increasing on many of the study area roadways, in addition to the congestion that occurs at both the Turnpike New Stanton Interchange and the PennDOT I-70 New Stanton Interchange. For the New Stanton economic center to remain vibrant, the flow of goods and services must be efficient.
As the traffic engineering consultant on the design team, Transportation Resource Group, Inc. (TRG) has taken the lead role in identifying the traffic, safety, access and linkage issues related to conditions in the greater New Stanton area. TRG is evaluating the needs and alternatives related to providing a new all-electronic (E-Z Pass) interchange on the Turnpike between the New Stanton (Exit 75) and Donegal (Exit 81) interchanges. The project required an extensive data collection and traffic modeling effort which was coordinated with the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission. TRG evaluated the various project alternatives to determine the traffic related merits of each. The project has progressed at a fast pace and the project team has managed to keep on track with the Turnpike's aggressive schedule. The project is currently under review by the PTC.
