MUNICIPAL PARKING STUDIES

Transportation Resource Group, Inc. (TRG) has completed a wide range of no-parking studies along municipal streets and roadways. The Pennsylvania Vehicle Code requires that a traffic and engineering study be completed prior to signing and enforcing on-street, no-parking restrictions. The typical criteria for establishing parking restrictions are:

  • Roadway width less than 19 feet on major arterials or less on other roadways
  • The width of the street cannot allow vehicles to move without yielding
  • There is need for roadway capacity/additional lanes
  • Crash history related to parked vehicles
  • The shoulder width is not sufficient

Other criteria exists, such as areas reserved for bus stops, adjacent to fire stations and other type driveways, and high speed roadways where the shoulder may be used as a clear recovery area.

Once the study is completed, the municipalities must pass an ordinance to post the parking restriction or prohibition.
