INTERSTATE 83 EXIT 28, STRINESTOWN Conewago Township, York County, PA
To accommodate the projected truck traffic from the proposed 2 million S.F. distribution facility, Transportation Resource Group, Inc. (TRG) designed the traffic signals at the Interstate 83, Exit 28 interchange with Susquehanna Trail (S.R.0295). TRG recommended that the interchange be signalized with turn lanes in the Traffic Impact Study for the development.
The design of the traffic signal provided several challenges that required both Conewago Township and PennDOT approvals. First, PennDOT recently replaced the bridge decking and saw cutting for loop detectors was not allowed. TRG researched the available technology and selected video for vehicle detection. This was one of the first locations in south central Pennsylvania where video detection was installed. The second challenge involved determining the most efficient signal phasing for the closely spread diamond interchange using Synchro software. TRG recommended and designed a single controller operation that required the electrical conduit be attached to the bridge across Interstate 83. In addition to signal design, TRG provided consultation for the construction of the signals.
